¡Descenclaustro total!

—

Bathroom Exclusive!

Fabi Fernández reports once again from New York, this time from the Hemisexual Institute of PerforQUÉ.

An expert in embodied practices, Fabi will tell us the true story of what happened with the 8th Encuentro, which should have been taking place at the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana in Mexico City this week—in what is now officially called The No-Encuentro Week.

¡Desenclaustro total!

–

Fabi looks for Sor Juana so she can get the real scoop about the UCSJ’s cancellation of the Hemi Encuentro.

Susana Cook is NOT here to curate the TrasNOcheo, but the Hemisexuals recreate the NOble atmosphere nonetheless. Among them is the scandalous Sor Presa. When Fabi finds her, the encounter is… impactful!

The ‘go-back-home’ rhetoric is so over-the-top that we thought parody was the only sane response.

SelfDeport.org was created in the fall of 2011 and officially launched in January 2012, after Mitt Romney said in a debate that the answer to immigration issues was self-deportation. While the concept Romney invoked (like Daniel D. Portado’s in the 1990s) was “attrition through enforcement”—making immigrants’ lives so miserable, they’ll give up and leave—, we view “repatriation” as a logical extension of the “anchor baby” argument, specifically the far-right proposals to modify the 14th Amendment to deny birthright citizenship for children of undocumented people.

The hardline “Patriots” at SelfDeport.org are mostly young, white, ultra-conservative U.S. citizens who have recently discovered a shocking truth: they themselves, or their (grand)parents, are “anchor babies.” Adamantly against birthright citizenship, these Patriots believe they should’ve never been allowed to be citizens this great land, and are willing to make the ultimate patriotic sacrifice by self-deporting to their (“illegal”) ancestor’s country of origin.

Following the group’s fake press release, they got calls from reporters and individuals who were often not just astonished but also emotionally concerned for the young Patriots choosing to leave “their” country. “But you’re…American!”, they said.

Through satire and “laughtivism,” the Repatriotas spark a conversation about “The Real America”and question mainstream assumptions about who belong in it. “Why do descendants of European immigrants who also stayed in the US without proper documentation,” they ask, “feel their own immigrant past is somehow ‘different’ from the DREAMers?”

The name Repatriotas was an inside joke: “They’re not just patriotas, they’re re-patriotas.” (¡Pero réquete-réquete patriotas!)

Selected press:

Using parody and satire as a critical tool, Fulana’s mock television commercials, music videos and print pieces respond to the ways ideologies and identities are marketed through the mass media. She is currently Associate Director of Arts and Media at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, a transnational network of institutions, artists and scholars throughout the Americas whose work focuses on the intersection of art and social change. Housed at New York University, the Institute promotes vibrant collaborations at the level of artistic practice and pedagogy, builds collections of artistic and academic materials for research and teaching across borders, and aims to train the next generation of performance-based political artists. To this end, Marlène heads up projects such as the Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library, an online archive of rare video documenting performance in the Americas, and EMERGENYC, a program for emerging performers in New York City focused on “artivist” (artist/activist) work. As a member of the Advisory Committee for the Lark Theater’s “The Word Exchange,” Marlène is involved in shaping an annual exchange program in which playwrights from Mexico and their U.S. counterparts translate and stage each other’s work. Her academic background is in Comparative Literature, having earned her BA in Literature at Harvard University, and her MA and PhD coursework (ABD) in Comparative Literature at Stanford University. During her time in California, she studied with Cherríe Moraga, performed with the San Francisco Mime Troupe and the Red Rocket Theater, and was a member of the Latina Theatre Lab, a collective of writers, performers, and directors whose work dealt with Latina identities, pop culture, and the intricacies of “belonging.” In 2010, she received her MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish at New York University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
